A lion and a tiger would be fairly evenly matched in a fight, but a tiger will probably come out as the winner, a U.S. scientist said.

“If I had to put my money on it, I would give the advantage to the tiger,” said Craig Saffoe, a biologist and the curator of great cats at the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington, D.C.

While a male lion is more likely to have more combat experience than a tiger, a tiger’s "killer instinct" may be the deciding factor in a death-match between the giant felines.

According to Saffoe, because lions live in packs, they tend to depend more on other lions. But tigers are loners by nature, and therefore are more aggressive and ruthless, and usually go straight to the throat for the quick kill.

Saffoe’s theory is also backed by records. When ancient Romans made African lions and Asian tigers fight in the Coliseum, tigers usually came out on top.

However, Saffoe said the two would be fairly evenly matched, given that they are quite similar in size and strength. While the title of the biggest feline belongs to the Siberian tiger, the most common Bengal tiger and the African lion both weigh around 180 to 190 kilograms.

사자와 호랑이의 힘은 엇비슷하지만, 싸움을 한다면 호랑이가 유리하다고 미국의 한 동물학자가 밝혔다.

“만약 돈을 걸어야 한다면, 호랑이에게 걸겠습니다”라고 미국 워싱턴 D.C에 있는 스미스소니언 동물원의 대형 고양잇과 동물을 담당하고 있는 크레이그 사포 씨는 말했다.

여기서 사자와 호랑이의 싸움이란 수컷 개체간의 싸움을 일컫는데, 사자와 호랑이 모두 수컷이 암컷보다 훨씬 크기 때문이다.

사포 씨는 사자는 단체생활을 하고, 무리 내의 수컷들은 싸움을 하면서 성장하기 때문에 혼자 사는 호랑이들보다 싸움 경험이 많을 것이라고 설명했다.

그렇지만 이러한 단체생활이 싸움에서 오히려 독이 될 수 있는데, 동료들이 지원해주는데 익숙한 사자들의 경우 싸움을 놀이로 즐기지만, 호랑이는 다른 누군가에 의존하지 않고 신속하게 죽이는 쪽으로 본능이 발달했기 때문이다.

과거 로마 제국의 경우, 사자와 호랑이를 경기장에서 싸우게 했는데 이 경우에도 대부분 승리는 호랑이의 몫이었다고 한다.

그러나 이 두 거대한 고양이과 동물들은 덩치와 힘이 비슷하기 때문에 그 차이는 크지 않을 것이라고 한다. 가장 큰 고양이과 동물은 시베리아 호랑이지만, 가장 흔한 벵갈 호랑이와 아프리카 사자 수컷의 경우 180~190kg 정도로 몸무게가 비슷하기 때문이다.
